There are about 3,500 San Diu ethnic minority households with over 15,000 people in Tuyen Quang Province, living mainly in the communes of Ninh Lai, Thien Ke, and Son Duong.

The San Diu people's houses are almost identical to those of the Kinh people in the Northern Delta. They are designed with discreet walled fences and solid gates.

The San Diu ethnic group in Son Duong cultivates rice and maize. They like to raise buffalo, thus each household possesses a buffalo stable. Buffaloes plough fields and create fertiliser for agricultural production as well as taking advantage of superfluous forages.

San Diu women's traditional clothes include black scarves; indigo blue long shirts;  red bibs; and white, pink or blue belts. Their accessories are silver necklaces, bracelets, earrings and pendants. The San Diu men wear traditional turbans on their heads, dark-coloured long shirts and white pants.

The San Diu people’s legendary ‘Soong Co’ folk singing has been recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage. Regarding the culinary culture of the San Diu ethnic minority people in Ninh Lai, Thien Ke and Son Nam communes, thin rice gruel is one special dish, attracting lots of tourists.
